Chicken Hot Pot, Kuchai Lama
New makan place added into my list, Chicken Hot Pot at Kuchai Lama (refer to sidebar). It was my first visit although I've been to the opposite cafe (Wingz Cafe) for a couple of times. It was a completely different dining experience. It is not steamboat, nor clay pot but a combination of both. When my colleague explained to me I was not able to get the idea. How come clay pot then suddenly it can turn into steamboat pulak?
The concept of the restaurant comes from Chongqing, China. Just out of curiosity, I searched for Chongqing in Wikipedia and found out that one of their attraction in is Hot Pot.
"Hot pot is Chongqing's local culinary specialty. Tables in hotpot restaurants usually have a central vat (or pot) where food ordered by the customers is boiled in a very spicy broth. As well as beef, pork, lotus and other vegetables, items such as pig's kidney, brain, duck's bowels, and cow's stomach are often consumed."
The food serves at Chicken Hot Pot is exactly the same like what it describes above. Menu comes with a few meat selections; beef, chicken, pork ribs, prawns and fish head. Customers can choose to have small, medium or large pot except fish whereby they only have one size. Prices ranging from RM18+ to RM34+. Besides that, they also have different level of spiciness. We tried medium spicy for both fish and ribs but somehow the ribs turned out to be more pedas. We were sweating like a pig while enjoying the food but it was really syok hehe.
The food may look alike because the sauce is about the same colour, but actually they taste very different and unique. The fish pot has a sourish taste and very appetizing, while ribs pot has a very rich meat flavour which cook together with lotus root. We ordered another pot of chicken and it tasted as good. It has a very strong taste of spices.
Once you are done with the meat, you can request the waiter/waitress to add soup into the pot. Again the soup has spicy or non spicy. Now the pot is filled with soup, it turns into steamboat. There is a small selection of fish balls and vegetables which the customers can choose from. Prices are stated on each item. Since the hot pot already full of taste, the soup turns out to be really delicious. I've never eaten a steamboat as rich as this. The downside is they have very limited varieties of steamboat items. Steamboat is not their main focus anyway but i still appreciate the idea of having hot pot and steamboat at the same time.
The only thing which I hate is they charge for refilling ice. Each time of refill cost RM1.20. Ridiculously isn't it? RM1.20 I can buy a huge packet of ice from 7-eleven and last me for days. Undeniable they are good in business la.They take every opportunity to earn your bucks. They know if you order a pot of chinese tea you will order for ice. Since the food is hot and spicy, you will have to refill the ice. Pandai betol.. A pot of chinese tea only how much? If they don't charge for the ice they will earn lesser comparing to other drinks which priced at RM5 and above. So you see the difference?
According to my colleague who've been to Chongqing, all the girls there have very fair and smooth skin like tau fu fa. When she asked the local business partner she was told that it is due to the spicy food that they consume. Chilly is good for detox, hence it helps to remove all the toxics from the body. I think the spices that they use for cooking also helps a lot. So, if you want to have tau fu fa skin you have to eat more chilly lol.
